And since it's arguably the most popular free email service in the world, good luck getting a meaningful email address without throwing in three or four digits into your user name! Also it is important to notice the amount of Spam hotmail accounts receive.

Description: Email.com (which is powered by Outblaze) is a pretty basic service, with one very obvious advantage: the extension of your email address. Imagine having bob@email.com as your email address - it's so simple and easy that your friends will never forget! Realistically, with millions of users now on the service, the chances of getting such a memorable address are very slim - but you never know (especially if your name is very rare!)

The basic service is web-based only: you have to log into the site to read and reply to mails. You get 10MB of storage space, and are limited to 2MB per incoming or outgoing message. Ads are displayed on the site and a tagline is added to outgoing messages. In addition, you will generally receive email offers from Email.com's partner advertisers.

Description: It is not the most sophisticated Web-based email service that Lycos offers, but at least in one important point it is state of the art: its simple spam protection is efficient and can be configured to trash all mail except from people in your address book. Unfortunately, features like a HTML editor, filters or POP access are missing. But Lycos Mail comes with 6 MB online mailbox size, and if you can do without advanced features you get an easy to use, reliable, and almost spam-free email account.

Free Web-based email services can give everybody in your household their personal email account that can be accessed form any computer connected to the Internet and, hey, they are free.

Really email is email and all of the above sites provide the service. As a recommendation I'd go for one of the top two free email providers as they are the best.
